A pin flag lives outdoors in full sun from opening to close, every day of the season. It is a consumable, and the useful question is how long the cycle is.

Fade is ultraviolet, and it is not optional

Every dyed fabric loses colour under sustained UV. Deep reds and bright blues go first, and they go evenly if the fabric is decent.

A supplier promising a flag will not fade is telling you they have not watched one for a season.

Wear is mechanical and it is worst where the flag meets the stick

The hoist takes constant movement against the pole, so a reinforced tube and clean stitching at the top of the flag do more for lifespan than anything printed on it.

Plan the cycle instead of chasing a promise

Most courses land on a full set annually and a handful of spares mid-season, with tournament flags bought separately.

Budgeted that way it is a small, predictable line rather than an unpleasant surprise in July.

Where spending more genuinely pays

Double-sided construction, a properly sized tube, and enough spares. Those three change how the course looks all season.

Heavier fabric on a daily-play flag mostly does not, and embroidery on one actively makes it slower to dry.
